LENS MATERIALS
CR-39 - Conventional plastic lens are half the weight of glass lenses and can be more easily scratched than glass, but can have a scratch protection applied.
POLYCARBONATE- Lighter, thinner and more impact resistant than basic plastic lens with an integrated UV protection. Recommended for active patients and children - due to the safety benefits of polycarbonate impact resistance.
TRIVEX- Newly developed lens material that is light and thin, impact resistant, and provides superior optics. Trivex is great for semi-rimless, drill mounted lenses and children’s lenses because they combine impact resistance and superior optics. Trivex is 60 times more impact resistant and 19% lighter than standard plastic lenses.
HI-INDEX- Lighter and thinner lenses with thinner edge thickness; Perfect for high prescriptions. Shimp Optical is experts in thin lens production. We will make a high quality thin lens that you will absolutely love
GLASS-Glass was the first material available and still offers superior optics. Glass is also the most scratch-resistant material. The disadvantage of glass is its weight, generally twice the weight of plastic, and takes longer to manufacture. Shimp Optical is one of the few laboratories that still produce glass lens.
LENS OPTIONS
SCRATCH RESISTANT COATING– Unfortunately, no lens material is scratch proof. A scratch resistant hard coating does help the lens to become more resistant to scratching. Most premium lens has a built-in scratch-resistant coating. Shimp Optical offers lens warranties on all of our scratch resistant coatings.
UV-TREATMENT – UV lens treatment blocks UV from our yes, much like sunscreen does for our skin. Overexposure to UV light to your eyes can cause cataracts, and other eye problems. Some premium lenses have a built-in UV protection, such as polycarbonate and polarized lens.
ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING- This coating is effective for reducing eye fatigue from computer, artificial light, and glary ghost images while driving at night. Anti-reflective coated lenses also enhance appearance by removing distracting reflections on the lens while letting more light through the lens so that you can see better. Shimp Optical offers a Basic A/R as well as a Premium A/R which is more resilient and repels water and oils.
MIRRORED LENSES – Mirror lens filter out infrared light and reflective light as well as giving a cool hip metallic or colored mirror appearance on your lens in today’s high fashion. Shimp Optical has a variety of mirror colors to choose from.
TRANSITIONS– These are lenses that darken as you go from indoors to outdoors. Transition lenses protect your eyes from UV rays because they have a built-in UV protection. We offer the latest in sun changing transition lens technology.
DRIVEWEAR LENSES - Drivewear lenses are a relatively new high-performance sun lens made especially for those who are always on the road. They are polarized sun lenses that vary in darkness and tone according to light conditions. The lenses change from pale yellow to dark amber when exposed to UV or visible light, so they work well behind the wheel of a car, unlike Transitions, which are activated only by UV (sun) light.
POLARIZED LENSES – Polarized lenses are the very best lenses for eliminating reflected glare from sunlight. They have a UV-Protection built- in to the lens. We offer polarized lens in grey and brown, with additional colors available. We are able to put polarized lenses in any frame, including large or extreme wrap frames. |
